Beginner's Gender Identity and Psychotherapy Seminar

This beginner's seminar is for providers who wish to gain basic information and skills to work competently with transgendered clients.

1) Intro to gender identity, the role of a gender specialist, DSM Diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder and the politics of using a diagnosis.

2) World Professional Association for Transgender Health and the Standards of Care, harm Reduction, insurance and diagnosis codes, conducting a gender assessment, collaboration versus "gatekeeping."

3) Taking a gender history related to childhood and adolescence, biological male versus biological female experiences, goals when working with children or adolescents.

4) Taking a gender history related to adult identity development including genderqueer clients and the experience of body and gender role dysphoria.

5) Taking a sexual/relationship history relevant to gender identity issues, sex and sexuality.

6) Transsexual transition stages, moving from most reversible to least reversible changes, developing a realistic timeline, resources for transgendered people in New England.

7) Assessing readiness for cross gender hormone treatment, writing “The Letter,” preparing clients for emotional, physical, sexual and social changes due to hormone treatment.

The cost is $50 each session. Each monthly meeting will be 1 ˝ hours. 20-30 minutes at the end of each training session will be available for clinicians to consult about transgender cases. Please contact me to find out when and where the seminar will be held in Northern California.

Advanced Gender Identity and Psychotherapy Seminar

Go beyond the basics with this engaging, advanced seminar for clinicians furthering their understanding of various gender identities and their social, medical and familial context.

1) Preparation and assessment around facial, genital and chest reconstructive surgeries, writing “The Letter” for surgery, discussion of local and international resources.

2) Families and children of transsexuals/transgendered people, discussion of child development stages and how transition may impact them, coming out to spouses and family while minimizing rejection.

3) Partners of transsexuals and crossdressers, interventions to reduce the purging of clothing and decreasing shame and guilt, conducting brief interventions and long-term couple work.

4) Transition in the workplace and college environments, helping to ease employers, coworkers and clients into the transition process, advocating for clients in the college setting.

5) Genderqueer clients and others who live outside gender binaries, discussion of possible physical and social interventions.

6) Body image and having healthy sexual relationships when body dysphoria is present, fantasy, sex toys and verbal communication skills to aid sexual relationship development.

7) Clients of color and gender identity issues, the impact of being a minority within a minority group, family issues related to culture and coming out.

8) Trauma and gender issues, impact of sexual/physical and emotional abuse on self-image, treatment planning when trauma symptoms coexist with gender issues.

9) Intersexuals and their families, identity and transition, gender interventions appropriate for physical and social needs.

The cost is $50 each session. Each meeting is one hour and forty minutes long, 30 minutes will be available for attendees or the presenter to bring in case material. This seminar can be offered once I receive enough interest in Northern California via email inquiry. I am also available to plan a monthly seminar or conference across the United States with special interest in providing this seminar in Northern California.
